Harbour of Hope Scarf & Cowl

Hello fellow yarn lovers!

Here in Airdrie, we have had a very mild winter so far this year until this past week. It has gotten cold in Airdrie, not a cold as it could be but cold enough that you need all the winter gear.

Wednesday, we got fresh snow and my kids were just so excited to play in it. Hunter, our dog, was equally excited about the snow, he hopped around trying catch snowflakes and making all kinds of happy noises. I love watching my littles playing and laughing in the snow.

I personally do not like cold weather and would much rather be cuddled up in my favourite chair, my crochet and a good movie or playing board game with my favourite people.

Are you an indoor or outdoor winter person?

Even though I am an indoor winter person, I LOVE creating winter items to wear when I must be outside in the cold.

Hats and scarves are my absolute favourite winter items to make and I have quite the collection for myself, so do my children.

This week I have a great winter scarf pattern for you all. It’s textured, customizable and works up quickly. This scarf is inspired by the Harbour of Hope Hat which you can find on Etsy and Ravelry.

PATTERN: Harbour of Hope Scarf & Cowl

What you need:

5.00 mm and 6.00 mm crochet hook (or hook to obtain gauge);

Any DK or worsted weight yarn. I used ALC Hand dyed DK yarn. Approximately 200 – 520 yards;

Measuring tape
Scissors
Tapestry needle
Stitch markers (optional)

Gauge with 6.00 hook
8 STS of pattern by 5 rows of pattern = 2.5 inch wide and 2 inch tall

Stitches you will be working with:

BPHDC: Back Post Half Double Crochet

CH: Chain

FPHDC: Front Post Half Double Crochet

HDC: Half Double Crochet
SC: Single Crochet
SK: Skip
SLST: Slip Stitch
ST: Stitches

Notes:  All CH 1/2 do not count as a stitch. You can use any 4-weight yarn. If you are having trouble matching the gauge, you may need to go up or down a hook size. You may want to mark out every 4 stitches after you do the first row of the body. This will help you to see where you need to put your stitches for row 2.

SCARF : CH 24,

Row 1 : HDC in next ST, HDC in next 22 STS, turn.  (23 STS)

Row 2 : CH 1, HDC in 1st ST, [FPHDC, SK 1, 3 HDC in next ST, SK 1] 5 times, FPHDC, HDC around last ST, turn.  (23 STS)

Row 3 : CH 1, HDC in 1st ST, [BPHDC around the previous rows FPHDC, HDC in the next 3 STS] 5 times, BPHDC around previous rows FPHDC, HDC in last ST, turn.  (23 STS)

Row 4 : CH 1, HDC in 1st ST, [FPHDC around the previous rows BPHDC, SK 1, 3 HDC in next ST, SK 1] 5 times, FPHDC around previous rows BPHDC, HDC in last ST, turn.  (23 STS)

Repeat rows 3 and 4 for rows 5 – 150.

Row 151 : CH 1, HDC across, fasten off and weave in ends. (23 STS)

At this time, you can choose to block your piece and add fringe. I recommend blocking if you are working with wool yarn.

COWL  – CH 84, SLST 1st CH to the last CH being careful not to twist the chain.

Row 1 : CH 1, HDC in each CH around, SLST to join. (84 STS)

Row 2 : CH 1, [FPHDC, SK 1, 3 HDC in next ST, SK 1] 21 times, SLST to join. (84 STS)

Row 3 : CH 1, [FPHDC around the previous rows FPHDC, HDC in the next 3 STS] 21 times, SLST to join. (84 STS)

Row 4 : CH 1, [FPHDC around the previous rows FPHDC, SK 1, 3 HDC in next ST, SK 1] 21 times, SLST to join. (84 STS)

Repeat rows 3 and 4 for rows 5 – 23.

Row 24 : CH 1, HDC around, SLST to join, fasten off and weave in ends. (84 STS)

At this time, you can choose to block your piece. I do recommend this if you are using wool yarn.
